Packing kitchen essentials for our cabin getaway.

October 7, 2013 8 Comments

I may have just used the term “our cabin” loosely.  Also, I must confess that the word “essentials” may also be a stretch. Truly, essentials are what convenience stores and little bait-slash-grocery-shop’s stock in quaint little towns on your way to nowhere.  Chilean Sea Bass is probably not going to make it into the essential pile of most folks.  Most folks wouldn’t understand but I know that you will.   So I just got back from nine days of glorious vacation with family ...

Can you believe we’ve been friends now for four years?

September 2, 2013 16 Comments

Guess what? nwafoodie just turned four years old.  Can you believe it?  Some of us have been friends since the beginning and some of us more recently, like when I recently toured Kelly Stamps’ kitchen and immediately had a 360% increase in new potential friends visiting within the first thirty minutes.  I still laugh at the sound of crickets when I chatted on Day 1 about which broth was my favorite as I prepared for an upcoming colonoscopy. Somehow I felt the need to share the colonoscopy part ...

I love this time of year. Get inspired: Debbie Arnold’s kitchen tour.

July 26, 2013 15 Comments

What would you do if you lived half of your life in one place and the other half in another? When would you ever feel at-home? Where would you keep your “good stuff?” For Debbie Arnold, author of the DiningwithDebbie blog, this describes her last three years.  She and her husband live in Benton, Arkansas during the week and for three weekends every month they trek it up here to their future retirement spot on beautiful Beaver Lake.  As a bonus, this gets them closer to their grandkids ...

The simple perfection of a grilled brown turkey fig.

July 22, 2013 10 Comments

What is better than a full-of-flavor ripened fruit or vegetable picked at the height of season? Not much! I know that I am not the only one who feels this way because you tell me so.  Ever taken a bite of sweet corn right off the stalk without a thought of waiting to roast it?  Yeah, I am talking to you.  Ever wistfully think back to the days when we all had to “wait until it is in season” for your favorite fruit or vegetable?  Yeah, I do.  Oh, don’t get me wrong.  I am extremely thankful ...

#virtual #smokeoff for me… Masterbuilt smoker for you.

July 3, 2013 197 Comments

All this talk about my new smoking addiction is fueling a monster. I am getting cocky and over-confident. Smack-talk is happening. I have been challenged to a July 4th #virtual #smokeoff tomorrow by Team Arnold (diningwithdebbie) and Team Davidson (LelaDavidson). Now I am scared. I may be over my head. (Help me.) Can I win a #virtual #smokeoff after only using my * awesome * MasterBuilt smoker for a week? Uh, yeah. Bring it. (There it is. Cockiness is ...

Procrastination isn’t really my thing.  I love structure, order, and checking things off my list. And for those times when I complete something that is not on my list… well, you better believe I add it quickly just so I can check it off. It happens. Imagine my surprise when I realized just now that it has almost been a full nine months since receiving my surprise Masterbuilt smoker from John McLemore and his Marketing guru (and wife’s best friend), Alicia. In my defense, we moved twice ...

Edamame hummus with olive tapenade is the new crack.

June 21, 2013 4 Comments

There is a new hummus in town. It is time for all the little chickpeas to hit the road. I have made the switch. Last month at the #bean2blog event, P. Allen Smith put together a quick edamame hummus snack for us (you can see him make it in the video) and then threw down a challenge in a sweet Southern drawl. “I’d like to see what variations you all come up with.” “Yeah, yeah, right, right. Variations. Hummus. Got it.” All I cared about with getting my hands on as much as that ...

Think of this message as a Public Service Announcement. And like any really fantastically helpful PSA, there is always a bit of obvious thrown in along with the common sense message. You know, messages like “don’t play around power lines” or “wash your hands after you visit the restroom,” and there’s also the ones about saving energy and “feed the pig.” I apologize in advance. This PSA isn’t mean to condescend. This message is for your friends and family.  Of course I know you all ...

Pantry tour: Kelly Stamps kitchen tour.

June 13, 2013 4 Comments

You know that saying, “you are what you eat?”  I think who you are is reflected in your kitchen, “you are what your kitchen is.” Think about it for a second.  Let your mind drift to your closest friend.  Does their kitchen reflect who they are at this particular time in their life? Okay, now think about your own kitchen.  Is it remodeled exactly the way you like it (lucky) or are you the who is always wishing for that magical time when you will finally get what you ...

Oh fiddle-dee-dee, try the fiddlehead ferns!

June 12, 2013 6 Comments

Tonight, I stinkin’ did it. I bit the bullet and splurged on the $4.99 package of fiddlehead ferns. Yeah, I stinkin’ did it. These gorgeous otherworldly tightly wound shoots from the foraged fern plant only come around for a brief moment.  I have lusted after them in magazines as they mocked me in their elusiveness.  I have pondered often whether they taste earthy, or bitter, or too delightful to describe. Oh, I’ve tasted their goodness. And Lyndi likey.   Now listen to ...

There is something quite glorious about simplicity There is something quite glorious about simplicity. I'm really feeling it as Dennis and I sit here in our living room, next to the crackling fire. Full disclosure, this picture isn't me BUT I do have the exact same coffee cup. Anyoo, I'm reminded how wonderful it is to be still. Not that I ever forget that reminder, it's just easier to revel in it, next to a fire. With snow softing falling outside. You know what I mean?

First, it was a percolator.
Then came the Breville coffee maker.
Next, along came a bodum pour over.
Quickly replaced by a French Press.
Then came an Aeropress.
Followed by a rediscovery of a favorite instant brand we enjoyed in Isreal.
Now, Aeropress is making a comeback.
And our beloved LaVazza espresso.
Which tastes like vacation at the Sonnelap in Vail.

Am I the only one who does coffee in phases?

What's next?

Probably need an espresso maker!

Both have their places. But man, oh man, I am finding myself craving more of the latter: slow, easy, chill.

“Just like becoming an expert in wine–you learn by drinking it, the best you can afford–you learn about great food by finding the best there is, whether simply or luxurious. Then you savor it, analyze it, and discuss it with your companions, and you compare it with other experiences.” – Julia Child
