Beauty in the slow, strolling, and bumping into friends.

pretty stars with plants

“Slow down, Lyndi,” I constantly tell myself.  Anyone else feeling this? When life goes fast, creativity suffers. For me, creativity brings balance and contentment to my analytical mind. Who doesn’t like contentment? When we are content, it radiates from within us and positively impacts those we love. Even strangers benefit.  All work and no play makes for a dull life, and absolutely no one benefits from that.  There is beauty in the slow and chaos in the ...

Drowning in a sea of recipes.

photo of binder full of recipes

Hi friends! I have been in a state of decluttering for, well, maybe a decade? Maybe all my life. Clutter makes me bonkers, and when things are tidy, edited, and purposeful, I feel like I can breathe easier. I often wonder what makes someone want to become a minimalist. Living in a stark environment with no charm or character. And on the other spectrum, what makes someone a maximalist? Living in an overabundance of acquired whims and rabbit trails. I wonder, is there a happy ...

Where were you sixteen years ago?

September 3, 2025 2 Comments
photo of downtown rogers ar and iron horse coffee

The year was 2009.  Were you living where you are today? In the same home? Or, living in the same town? Were you driving the same car to your same job at the same building? Were you married? Single? DINK? In middle school?  Sixteen years ago, I was forty.  Definitely not middle school. Sixteen years ago, I was sitting in this very same spot, doing the very same thing.  Now, before you gasp loudly and marvel about how boring I am, I actually made today happen on ...

Winter Weather Pantry Stockup - roundup of photos of items listed in blog post

When preparing for a snowstorm, stock up on essential pantry items to keep you going for the short and long term. Hi. As I sit here, eight inches of pure white fluffy snow is piled outside my office window. The silence is peaceful, and I feel a sense of relief. The relief comes from knowing I can officially “turn off” and not feel pressured to go out. It’s like a small get-out-of-jail-free card, which is an odd feeling because I honestly don’t feel like I am trapped. Mainly, the snow ...

Jasons deli meal hack - featured image

The Garden Fresh Salad Bar at Jason’s Deli is packed with wholesome ingredients that are great for weekly meal planning and are affordable. A million years ago, when we lived in Modesto, California, Dennis and I often met for lunch at the O’Briens grocery store near our workplace.  O’Briens had a MAGNIFICENT salad bar overflowing with farm-fresh veggies and fruits. We would fill our shared plastic container with all the goodies, go outside to their courtyard, and have lunch. At the ...

No special glasses are involved, or special occasions are needed. And you don’t need a particular type of drink. You need someone else. A moment. And something to clink. Myths and traditions. Instead of planting flowers in your hanging baskets and window boxes, plant herbs for maximum beauty and usefulness. Hi friends! Today’s Small Food Idea is all about adding a touchpoint of beauty to something as simple as growing herbs. You probably already know that growing your herbs in the summertime is economical compared to buying a small plastic container of sprigs that costs a zillion dollars (okay, close). Growing herbs is pretty straightforward. All it takes is good soil, ...

Thankful Thursday – the humble egg.

February 1, 2024 2 Comments
hand holding an egg

What food do you always keep on hand? Today, I’m sharing why I’m thankful for the humble egg. What is your earliest food memory? Was it an actual food or an experience? Or was it both? Mine was both.  The incredible, edible egg. In 1976, the American Egg Board’s marketing slogan was “The incredible, edible egg.” Did you know I STILL sing that slogan virtually every time I open a carton of eggs? And wait – there’s more! I also perform the “Lookit! An egg appears!” magic trick in ...

As an Amazon Associate, I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. My fridge is always stocked with an immune-boosting make-your-own fire tonic. It’s easy to make and tastes delicious! Eating right, exercising consistently, and getting enough sleep can be challenging. It’s so easy to pop into that drive-thru lane, open a bag of chips, or binge-watch “just one more episode.”  I get it. We all have our tugs and pulls that distract us from sticking to good ...

carving in birch tree the words YOLO and Hi

Inspiration can grab you at the oddest places, and if you’re paying attention, you’ll find something you didn’t know you needed. Vail Village is my happy place. Anyone who knows me knows that Dennis and I go there twice yearly to soak it all in, from the crisp air to the cobblestone streets, the charming alpine influence, and the incredible food and drinks.    But my favorite part of Vail is the strolls we take.  YOLO. Hi. We must’ve walked past these birch ...

Sourdough is a metaphor for life.

einkorn sourdough bread front view of a sliced loaf

Sourdough isn’t for the faint of heart. It takes effort and consistency. Sourdough is incredible, and I’m over it. A few weeks ago, I posted a gorgeous photo of my weekly einkorn sourdough bread in my online journal. The buttery-crisp crust was perfection. Here’s what I wrote in my journal: “I came. I conquered. Now, goodbye. I’m over you, sourdough.” When I grow up… In the back of my mind, I always knew that one day, “when I grow up,” I would bake sourdough bread. Yes, I know that ...

Snacky Snacks on the patio.

table with snacks on a tray and drinks

Some of my favorite hacks for slowing down, living simply, and eating happily involve Snacky Snacks. Have you ever heard the theory that pastors preach about areas in their lives that are a struggle? I think I can relate because it’s probably why I talk a lot about slow living. It’s always been a struggle for me to stop “doing,” and sitting still feels like a guilty pleasure.  And yet… Sitting still is necessary! As humans, our bodies work best when we rest and recharge. God even ...

There is something quite glorious about simplicity There is something quite glorious about simplicity. I'm really feeling it as Dennis and I sit here in our living room, next to the crackling fire. Full disclosure, this picture isn't me BUT I do have the exact same coffee cup. Anyoo, I'm reminded how wonderful it is to be still. Not that I ever forget that reminder, it's just easier to revel in it, next to a fire. With snow softing falling outside. You know what I mean?
My coffee routine is alllll over the place! Firs My coffee routine is alllll over the place!

First, it was a percolator.
Then came the Breville coffee maker.
Next, along came a bodum pour over.
Quickly replaced by a French Press.
Then came an Aeropress.
Followed by a rediscovery of a favorite instant brand we enjoyed in Isreal.
Now, Aeropress is making a comeback.
And our beloved LaVazza espresso.
Which tastes like vacation at the Sonnelap in Vail.

Am I the only one who does coffee in phases?

What's next?

Probably need an espresso maker!

Both have their places. But man, oh man, I am finding myself craving more of the latter: slow, easy, chill.

“Just like becoming an expert in wine–you learn by drinking it, the best you can afford–you learn about great food by finding the best there is, whether simply or luxurious. Then you savor it, analyze it, and discuss it with your companions, and you compare it with other experiences.” – Julia Child
