Add a little whimsy to entertaining.

Her townhouse was on the second floor and up a flight of stairs. Dennis and I each came bearing a bottle of wine.  It’s what you do when invited over to an impromptu dinner.  With people you don’t know.  On vacation.  Invited by people you don’t know. Two bottles felt right. A few days earlier Dennis and I were in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg Beach area of Florida on a vacation.  Gulf side.  We went to church services and arrived as hymns were being sung.  We didn’t know a soul.  We just ...

Hickory nuts are the perfect symbol of autumn: beautiful yet fleeting.

November 18, 2011 2 Comments

Hello beautiful Fall. I watch you change into a myriad of colors and then, one by one... you shimmy off your beautiful coat of many colors. Your autumn dance is enchanting. Here in Northwest Arkansas it is breath taking and majestic. The peak is over and the leaves are almost all down.  It is as if Fall is giving its deepest sigh. One of my favorite parts of autumn is listening to acorns drop and observing tree nuts still hanging on with all of their might. Sigh.  Oh happy ...

Field trip to Olive Ewe Sheep Farm, in Lowell.

October 28, 2011 Leave a Comment

You guys rock. I love it when you share a new product, ingredient, restaurant opening or special dish.  I love it that we all want to help each other discover.  I love sharing back the wealth of greatness available in our beautiful neck of the woods. Silja sent me a message the other day.  “If you like lamb, I heard this was a great place…” Lamb is my favorite special-meal. Silja rocks. I am now the proud owner of ½ a lamb.  He/she was born in February of this year on one of the ...

Chat Noir Bistro beet and avocado salad - main (c)thejoyofeatingwell

The first time I had this beet and avocado salad, something inside me exploded. I was like, "What is this goodness and why have I never had a salad with beets, avocados, and blue cheese before?" Chat Noir Bistro in NYC. Let’s start with the over-the-top flavor beet and avocado salad explosion experience I encountered at an Upper East Side French bistro in New York City called Chat Noir Bistro. (Unfortunately, it's now closed.)  Dennis and I were having an ...

Refreshed.

I am back from two weeks of glorious vacation, with my heart lifted, spirit stirred, mind motivated, and well, refreshed. Contentedly refreshed. All summer long I watched my friends head off on summer vacation and I thought Hurry Fall, I need you. The wait was worth it. I did miss you. Let’s catch up. There is so much to talk about. And share. And the food, the glorious food!  Oh my, you are in for a treat this year! The foods and treats I marveled, ooohed and awhhhed ...

I’m obsessed with Whole Food’s Chicken Tortilla Soup.

September 23, 2011 14 Comments

** Think you like this recipe? There is an even better one posted called "Better Than Whole Foods Chicken Tortilla Soup," posted here. Just because the nearest Whole Foods is two hours away from Northwest Arkansas, doesn’t mean that we can’t participate in its awesomeness. Whenever I’m in Tulsa or North Little Rock or wherever there is a Whole Foods, I make a beeline to the soup station.  Their chicken tortilla soup (strangely though, I’ve never actually seen any tortilla in it) packs ...

Vintage potato chip containers.

September 19, 2011 4 Comments

My friend Beth, The Food Adventuress, recently blogged about her favorite kitchen tools. One of them completely was out of the ordinary.  A surprising unexpected entry. And, it was COMPLETELY adorable. What was it? One of her favorite kitchen tools was “the chip can.” “The chip can” is an old-timey tin container that potato chips and pretzels used to be stored in and sold and often prominently displayed advertising for a shopkeeper.  From what I can gather, these tins ...

Happy Birthday, nwafoodie!

August 31, 2011 1 Comment

She is growing up! As I look back over the past two years it feels good to know that so much as improved!  I have to chuckle at some of my earlier blog post photos and topics. Such as: My very first blog post talked about an upcoming colonoscopy.  Nice. World’s worst photo on a blog post. Ever. Silliest title with lame pun attempt. Giggle. Okay, enough. You’ve had your fun. Speaking of fun…. Get ready for my second annual anniversary week of ...

The scale doesn’t lie.

August 24, 2011 2 Comments

Yesterday I talked about the 5 VIRTUES OF A FOOD SCALE over at themightyrib.com, a Houston food blog where I have a monthly column called “You Are What You Eat.” Basically, it’s like this:  I’ve been going ga-ga-crazy enjoying all types of previously forbidden foods since finding out my happy test results.  Drastic measures had to be taken or else. I bought a food scale so my weight scale would be happy. You should, too (if you don’t already have one). Lyndi Eat well, ...

Looking for jadeite green glass dishes?

August 22, 2011 1 Comment

Let me help! Did you receive your September 2011 issue of Martha Stewart Living?   In it, there is an enchanting article on page 138 that delves into the jadeite green class collection of Martha Stewart and her daughter, Alexis. According to the article, “during the Depression, when housewives couldn’t afford to waste a crumb, glassware companies turned out inexpensive jadeite containers for flour, salt, and other ingredients.” Charming! As any collectable, some pieces ...

My answer in the comments - share yours!
There is something quite glorious about simplicity There is something quite glorious about simplicity. I'm really feeling it as Dennis and I sit here in our living room, next to the crackling fire. Full disclosure, this picture isn't me BUT I do have the exact same coffee cup. Anyoo, I'm reminded how wonderful it is to be still. Not that I ever forget that reminder, it's just easier to revel in it, next to a fire. With snow softing falling outside. You know what I mean?
My coffee routine is alllll over the place! Firs My coffee routine is alllll over the place!

First, it was a percolator.
Then came the Breville coffee maker.
Next, along came a bodum pour over.
Quickly replaced by a French Press.
Then came an Aeropress.
Followed by a rediscovery of a favorite instant brand we enjoyed in Isreal.
Now, Aeropress is making a comeback.
And our beloved LaVazza espresso.
Which tastes like vacation at the Sonnelap in Vail.

Am I the only one who does coffee in phases?

What's next?

Probably need an espresso maker!

Both have their places. But man, oh man, I am finding myself craving more of the latter: slow, easy, chill.

“Just like becoming an expert in wine–you learn by drinking it, the best you can afford–you learn about great food by finding the best there is, whether simply or luxurious. Then you savor it, analyze it, and discuss it with your companions, and you compare it with other experiences.” – Julia Child
