Have you ever made apple chips?

November 18, 2015 Leave a Comment

This post contains a link to sponsored content written in partnership with Taste Arkansas, an online food site curated by Arkansas Farm Bureau. Sugar, spice, and everything nice. Yep, that just about describes the ingredients in baked apple chips. You can mix it up any way that you like, plain, sugar-dusted, cinnamon and sugar-dusted, maple syrup, or even add a little heat like cayenne or curry. You don’t need a fancy mandoline slicer (extra credit if you have one), just a sharp knife, ...

*** Anita Stafford #3 is the winner! Thank you all for entering and sharing the awesome recipe links! *** A few months ago I wrote an article for the Grassroots Farmers Cooperative, a farmer-owned and farmer-operated coop. Servicing Northwest and Central Arkansas, this band of farmers gathered together to share resources to satisfy a stable distribution inventory pipeline for those of us who want high-quality, sustainable, and local meats and poultry. For this particular ...

This post is sponsored by De Nigris Italian vinegars. Unless you are living in the Alaskan tundra or you have a device that heats up your car overnight in your garage, then year-round grilling is a thing. We employ our trusty gas grill when the frogs are croaking as well as when the snow hushes all sounds of outdoor life. It is an extension of our kitchen and an easy excuse to bundle up and huddle by the “ahem” fire. It brings life to our foods and there is a simple joy when hearing meat ...

Using up the last of summer’s bounty.

October 29, 2015 3 Comments

Some of you still have a trickling of your summer vegetable garden hanging on. I know, because I’ve seen your facebook photos showing them off. As you should! I love seeing your gardens, from the sophisticated pinterest-worthy layouts to the modest 4x4 raised garden that found its way to the one spot in the yard with just enough light to make magic happen. The banana peppers are barely hanging on and their grip has just about called uncle. If you are one of the lucky ones with a ...

My interview on foodydirect, an online foodie marketplace.

October 27, 2015 Leave a Comment

You know how much I love searching out local spots and hole-in-the-walls and the thrill of a new food source or gadget discovery. Don’t even get me started on gadgets galore and entertaining fanciness tempting me from many fabulous flea markets and antique malls we have scattered throughout the Northwest Arkansas countryside. And when I travel, I am always searching. Oh yes, always searching for that something-something that catches my eye. Or my tastebuds. And the fun I have sharing back ...

Where are my manners? How have I not shared with you the link to a local food podcast that chats about all Northwest Arkansas food philosophy? Don’t worry; it still is a relatively new podcast so you can catch up quite quickly. The RightKindaSloppy podcast launched in May and is hosted by Bobbie Foster. Her interview style keeps things interesting as she digs deep into local topics. Listen to these as you drive to work, go shopping, or just have it playing in the background as you ...

Hi there. Whatcha’ been up to? Me? I just returned from a two-week Sabbatical. No work. No ordinary life events. No ordinary stresses. Nothing but quiet, peaceful, rejuvenating days punctuated by family, friends, my church family, and a reconnection to what life is all about and a rebalance of priorities. In a word, I feel centered. Balanced. Calm. The first nine days we spent in Orange Beach, Alabama and the back half was in Vail, Colorado. My good friend Rachel talks often about how ...

How does a fried green tomato caprese salad sound right about now?

October 6, 2015 2 Comments

Content sponsored by #denigris1889 Two things before we begin. One, let me just say that this recipe isn’t technically “fried.” It’s baked. Secondly, you technically don’t have to only use green tomatoes. We all know that many grocery stores stock tomatoes that are unripe in the inside - yet are shiny red on the outside. They are tough and not the tastiest. Those. Those are the ones that are perfect for a recipe such as this because it will hold up to the heat and the heat will coax ...

We all know that the carrot ginger dressing is best part of a sushi house, right?

September 8, 2015 1 Comment

Content sponsored by #denigris1889 I know, I know. You may disagree with me and that’s okay. If we dine together, I will just reach over and take over your salad. You cool with that? You know the carrot ginger dressing that I am talking about right? It’s served on top of crisp and refreshing iceberg lettuce and not much else. For some reason the salad bowls are square and plastic. Perhaps melamine. Decorative is option, depending on the restaurant. Each bowl is modest. Five ...

Five Foodie Finds for Friday :: Fun and practical.

August 21, 2015 2 Comments

The internet is brimming with goodies that are begging us to pay attention to. Today’s foodie finds are both fun and practical. Is it wrong that I want them all? 1. Sunnyside Up tray. Cute. We’ve all seen the porcelain egg holders in stores, magazines, and Pinterest photos. This is the first time I have come across a wooden tray to house your homesteader or farmers market beauties. Perfect for the times you are baking and need to bring an egg or two up to room ...

Day after day. After day? Yep, that’s what has been going on over here in the Fultz household. The bell peppers this time of year are so fresh, bright, and vibrant that it is almost as if a gallery light is positioned right on them in the produce section.“Come, come here. Pick us. ...

I didn’t want to rub it in. Maybe I decided to save it for now so you could visit one of the restaurants from the event this weekend. Regardless, this is what I am going to do the next time this event is announced… I will get out the bullhorn and proclaim “hurry, hurry, hurry – buy your tickets!”   The ...

Content sponsored by #denigris1889 I tried the kale chip thing. I really tried. I tried the kale smoothie route. It was good if I used a lot of blueberries. Lots. I tried kale pesto and I gotta’ admit it was pretty rocking. Then again, I use Tuscan kale when I can find it and add lots of olive oil, pine nuts, and Parmesan. A trifecta of perfection. At the end of the day, spinach always comes back to my heart. One of my favorite things to do is try to be as resourceful as ...

The Gluten Free Cheat Sheet book is a good start for the #gf newbie in your life.

July 10, 2015 1 Comment

I’ve been intermittently reading The Gluten Free Cheat Sheet ever since Perigee Books, Penguin Random House sent me a pre-release copy a few weeks ago. This newest book from gluten-free lifestyle blogger, April Peveteaux, hit the stores on Tuesday of this week. While my true intention was to quickly skim-read to get the highlights, I am finding myself taking the time to let it all sink in. April’s light-hearted yet expert approach is completely engaging. After receiving a celiac diagnosis ...

Binge watch the Chef’s Table series on Netflix. It’s awesome.

Screen capture of Francis Mallman, Patagona on Chef's Table   It’s been raining here in Northwest Arkansas. Tons. Torrential tons. I love it. It energizes me. For many, rains that seems to never cease brings a melancholy or, at the very least, the overwhelming desire to curl up with a blanket and read a good book or watch a movie. Are you in that camp? In today’s world we no longer have to wait for our weekly episodes of our favorite television shows or brave the ...

There is something quite glorious about simplicity There is something quite glorious about simplicity. I'm really feeling it as Dennis and I sit here in our living room, next to the crackling fire. Full disclosure, this picture isn't me BUT I do have the exact same coffee cup. Anyoo, I'm reminded how wonderful it is to be still. Not that I ever forget that reminder, it's just easier to revel in it, next to a fire. With snow softing falling outside. You know what I mean?
My coffee routine is alllll over the place! Firs My coffee routine is alllll over the place!

First, it was a percolator.
Then came the Breville coffee maker.
Next, along came a bodum pour over.
Quickly replaced by a French Press.
Then came an Aeropress.
Followed by a rediscovery of a favorite instant brand we enjoyed in Isreal.
Now, Aeropress is making a comeback.
And our beloved LaVazza espresso.
Which tastes like vacation at the Sonnelap in Vail.

Am I the only one who does coffee in phases?

What's next?

Probably need an espresso maker!

Both have their places. But man, oh man, I am finding myself craving more of the latter: slow, easy, chill.

“Just like becoming an expert in wine–you learn by drinking it, the best you can afford–you learn about great food by finding the best there is, whether simply or luxurious. Then you savor it, analyze it, and discuss it with your companions, and you compare it with other experiences.” – Julia Child
