Teach yourself to use your kitchen gadgets.

gadgets are only useful if used (c)thejoyofeatingwell

Want to know how to declutter kitchen gadgets? It is simple if you have this mindset: Gadgets are only useful if used. It’s kinda a life lesson that applies to so many things in our lives from physical to mental clutter. Gadgets, such as Instant Pots, air fryers, toaster ovens, toasters… these all take physical space and honestly, mental space if we let them.

How many times have you found yourself saying, “I need to use my ___________. It’s taking up too much space.”

Let them go. Someone else can use them!

Attack kitchen gadget clutter with gusto.

We’re spending more time at home anyhow, so the best time is now. Today. Tomorrow. This weekend. If you are someone who needs more step-by-step guidance, you’re in good luck! I’ve written about this before in a post called “How to organize your kitchen gadget drawer.”

Fair warning: I firmly believe that it’s difficult to organize clutter without eliminating the clutter. I promise you’ll love the white space!

Make useless gadgets go bye-bye.

As in, goodbye, see ya later, it was nice knowing you and don’t come back now, ya hear. I give you full permission to let it go. To let THEM go.

If you’re on the fence, keep them ONLY if you USE it.

As in, use it. This week. And if you give yourself all the reasons why you can’t use it this week, think about it. Why is that? Is it an emotional thing? Did someone give it to you and you’re afraid they will find out? I hear ya, I’m in the same boat. And, that’s a tough one… maybe that one you start to use? That’s what I am telling myself.

Okay, you’ve decluttered those gadgets, now what?

  • Happy dance. ALWAYS start with a happy dance! Purging is awesome!
  • Ask your circle of friends and family if anyone needs your gadget.
  • Do you have a friend who has a flea market booth? Gift it to them.
  • Support local thrift shops by donating them.
  • Make extra cash by selling on ebay or etsy or on your blog “shop.”

So, what’s the next step after you’ve purchased those useless gadgets? Are you ready to join me in making this a new habit going forward with any new gadget that we acquire?

I purge kitchen items periodically. However, when I do, I put those gadgets in one box and hold onto them for 6 months. If I haven’t used an item from the box during that time, out it goes. I only have 1 appliance I really haven’t used — a George Foreman grill that I bought on sale when we bought the lake house. Never used it. I feel like I need to find it a new home:) xoxoxo

That’s a really great tip, Debbie! I do that with some of my “on the fence outfits” — it makes perfect sense to do the same with gadgets. Great tip!!!!

One of my favorite memories as a kid growing up in the Research Triangle in North Carolina was the annual church hayride at the country home of our friends, the Barbours. We lived in a suburb of the state capital, close to physically yet far away from life on the outskirts of town filled with Tobacco fields, cotton patches, and red dirt roads.

The Barbours had some farm that my little self couldn’t comprehend. In reality, they may have had just land, yet to me; land meant a farm. And besides, they had a big ol’ barn, tractors, and hosted the annual hayride.

My favorite part of the memory was the firepit, where everyone gathered around, laughed, and enjoyed each other’s company. It didn’t matter if you were a kid or elderly.

“Just like becoming an expert in wine–you learn by drinking it, the best you can afford–you learn about great food by finding the best there is, whether simply or luxurious. Then you savor it, analyze it, and discuss it with your companions, and you compare it with other experiences.” – Julia Child
