If beet juice and salt are good enough for the road, they’re good enough for a martini. Or at least that what I told myself as I whipped together a tasty martini made with beet juice and a touch of salt.

In the past week, we’ve had a 90-degree weather swing from bone-chilling windy snowstorms to oh-look-it’s-summer-today!

It’s always good to be prepared for weather extremes, don’t you think? Obviously, there’s always “the run” on toilet paper, milk, eggs, bread, beer, and candy that we always hear about.

If you’re a foodie, your stormy weather food run may look a wee bit different, wouldn’t you agree?

Me? I grabbed a tin of smoked trout, ahi tuna, and extra dry vermouth.

Because, martinis.

Here in the Ozarks, our road crew will pre-treat the pavement with a mixture of beet juice before a big storm. That’s how THEY prepare.

For the average person, we use ice melt – because beet juice? Well, beet juice is not something we tend to have laying around.

Or…

Let’s talk b juice vs. beet powder.

Okay, okay.

If you have a juicer and beets, yes you can quickly have beet juice. If you don’t have a juicer or beets, a quick trip to the natural food store juice aisle will score you a bottle of beet juice but I gotta’ warn you… the price tag is hefty and once opened you’ll need to drink it quickly.

Let’s talk about Plan C.

Plan C is keeping beet powder in your pantry.

Besides being a wonderful source of nutrients that can be added to yogurts, smoothies, and yes, even burgers, beet powder mixed with a little bit of water can now become… beet juice!

Fabulous! How fun, right?

So, giving honor to the roads department, stocking up for emergencies and being oh-so-prepared, here is my recipe for a De-Icer Martini, made with beet juice and a touch of salt.

Jump to Recipe

Dr. Cowan’s Garden Three Beet Powder.

You can find beet powders at specialty stores such as Tea & Spice Exchange in downtown Bentonville OR buy a super high-quality three beet powder from Dr. Cowan’s Garden Nutritious & Organic Vegetable Powders.

I’m an affiliate for Dr. Cowan’s Garden because of all of his many wonderful garden vegetable powders that I keep on hand to use as seasonings, like his Three Beet Powder.

Here’s a link if you want to buy some:

How to chill your coup.

Here’s one last tip before you jump to the recipe and start shaking – literally – things up. Grab your martini glass or coup and fill with ice water before serving.

Doing this will chill your glass quickly because everyone knows that a martini tastes better when chilled!

Just like the roads department preps by having plenty of beet juice before as storm, I recommend that you jump to Dr. Cowan’s Vegetable Powders site and buy some of their three beet powder for your pantry.

And, while you are there, be sure to check out their leek powder, one of my personal favorites to add to soups, eggs, and sour cream as a dip!

Before a big storm, what do you like to stock up on?

Warmly,

Lyndi
