Five Foodie Finds for Friday, December 13th.

Hello foodie friends.

I thought I would bring some of my NYC trip this past week into your inbox.  That rich city is abundant with its hidden treasures and I barely scratched the surface. These five foodie finds are just a few of the jewels located within the retailer links.

Happy surfing!

1.

French decorating knife. Surprise!  Something French-made again and wow, this French-made knife is a beauty. Its wooden handle is elegant and the 3.75” steel blade is dainty and exquisite.  This was the most expensive item that I purchased at the actual JBPrince store, located on 31st and Madison, and it only put me back $18.80.  I purchased it for Dennis specifically for his favorite task of slicing mushroom for our weekend breakfast frittatas.  Who knows?  I may even use it for food decoration techniques.

2.

Pesto and truffles sauce. Put Eataly on your must-do list the next time you visit the Big Apple (and now in Chicago).  Located across the street from the famed Flatiron Building, Eataly takes an entire block and transforms it into a magical Italian marketplace. From produce to fresh fish and pasta, home goods, and well, just about anything Italian you can think of, Eataly is an excellent introduction to the magic of NYC.  This pesto and truffle sauce is produced by Urbani family, the world leader of Italian truffles. (Here is a tip to local Northwest Arkansas peeps… this sauce is available at Fresh Market in Rogers.  Top shelf on the right with the pasta sauces.)

3.

Hella Bitters aromatic bitters. These Brooklyn bitters really caught my eye when shopping at the Bowery Kitchen supply store at Chelsea Market.  Located in Chelsea and close to the Hudson River, this store is crammed full of all culinary things that a local chef or resident could possibly need.  Me?  I need bitters and lots of them. Bitters are perfect addition to your bar and go perfect when making an Old Fashioned and of course, a Manhattan!

4.

A dozen of Russ and Daughters plain bagels. Yes, you can have the quintessential iconic NYC bagel delivered to your very own kitchen.  Russ and Daughters is an appetizing store that opened in 1914, on the eastside of downtown. Located about a block from the famous Katz deli, R&D bagels are rolled by hand, boiled and then perfectly timed in their old-fashioned revolving oven. I love everything about this shop, the hustle and bustle of shoppers all shouting out their orders, the many choices of pickled and smoked fishes, the cream cheese choices, and the Turkish apricots.  Oh my, the Turkish apricots will make you surrender to the charm of the city and dream of owning a studio apartment.  Just to return for the food.

5.

Larien the original bagel guillotine. You just ordered those Russ and Daughter bagels, right?  Now you need a bagel guillotine, aka a bagel slicer. Zabars on the Upper West Side is located on the opposite end of Manhattan from R&D yet is another beloved NYC institution.  This bagel cutter from Zabars will protect your loved ones from the dreaded bagel cut injury, known as BCI to those in the know.

You can now go back to happily eating your New York bagel, spread with cream cheese by your new French decoration knife.  Add a dab of truffle pesto sauce and kick back enjoy while sipping your Manhattan.  A cocktail goes with a bagel, right?

Do you have a foodie find that you would like to share?  Drop me a note.

Happy Friday!

In pursuit of small joys that add simplicity to life. + @nwafoodie

There are signs of spring everywhere, and I am rea There are signs of spring everywhere, and I am ready for it! Yet..... that doesn't mean that I'm still hopeful for some cool mornings where we can light a fire!

There is something quite glorious about simplicity There is something quite glorious about simplicity. I'm really feeling it as Dennis and I sit here in our living room, next to the crackling fire. Full disclosure, this picture isn't me BUT I do have the exact same coffee cup. Anyoo, I'm reminded how wonderful it is to be still. Not that I ever forget that reminder, it's just easier to revel in it, next to a fire. With snow softing falling outside. You know what I mean?
My coffee routine is alllll over the place! Firs My coffee routine is alllll over the place!

First, it was a percolator.
Then came the Breville coffee maker.
Next, along came a bodum pour over.
Quickly replaced by a French Press.
Then came an Aeropress.
Followed by a rediscovery of a favorite instant brand we enjoyed in Isreal.
Now, Aeropress is making a comeback.
And our beloved LaVazza espresso.
Which tastes like vacation at the Sonnelap in Vail.

Am I the only one who does coffee in phases?

What's next?

Probably need an espresso maker!

Microwave turntable = quick, fast, speed

Record player turntable = slow, easy, chill

Both have their places. But man, oh man, I am finding myself craving more of the latter: slow, easy, chill.

Now, to get a record player...

“Just like becoming an expert in wine–you learn by drinking it, the best you can afford–you learn about great food by finding the best there is, whether simply or luxurious. Then you savor it, analyze it, and discuss it with your companions, and you compare it with other experiences.” – Julia Child
