It’s time to start smoking.

Procrastination isn’t really my thing.  I love structure, order, and checking things off my list. And for those times when I complete something that is not on my list… well, you better believe I add it quickly just so I can check it off. It happens.

Imagine my surprise when I realized just now that it has almost been a full nine months since receiving my surprise Masterbuilt smoker from John McLemore and his Marketing guru (and wife’s best friend), Alicia.

In my defense, we moved twice during that time, remodeled, nursed an ailing father, husband took a Sabbatical and then started new career, and we recently purchased paddle boards and they are kinda’ a blast and we are sorta’ kinda’ hooked.

Life happens and sometimes you forget you have something cool and new to explore.

Let’s flash back. Last September I interviewed celebrity chef John McLemore (and CEO of Masterbuilt) when he was in town for the new Cabela’s grand opening event in Rogers and a book signing for his new cookbook, “DADGUM That’s Good, Too!”

During the interview, I picked his brain about smoking, grilling, favorite recipes, eating, and was thrilled to receive AND give away a signed cookbook of his.  He came across kid-like and full of crazy energy.  I thought it was hilarious that he made a face during our official photo moment.

Then, after the interview he said, “Oh, we brought along a smoker for you.”

Nonchalantly.

Like everyday someone just happens to have a top-of-the-line electric smoker up in their hotel room, while traveling, and then offers to go get it and put it in your car.

That happens to me alllll the time.

Now let’s skip to last Sunday.  Sunday we seasoned that smoker gem for the first time and prepped the initiation bounty.  It only seemed right that I flip open his cookbook and christen the event the proper way.  I chose a dry-rub DADGUM GOOD BRISKET (you can’t make these titles up) from page 39 and CAJUN SMOKED CHICKEN from page 67.

I foresee the rest of my cooking life obsessed with this smoker.

Moral of the story?

1.

If you have gadgets sitting around your home that you aren’t using, crack it open and use it.  Play around with it.  Get curious.  Throw down a challenge to yourself.

2.

If you aren’t smoking yet, it’s time.  If you are like me and have been perfectly happy with the put-the-wood-chips-in-a-tinfoil-packet-and-smoke-on-your-grill action, great.  It’s basically free that way and still crazy delicious, right?  However, since trying out the smoker for the first time and realizing how easy it is to just set it and walk away (it is all digital, complete with a remote time and a built in temperature probe!), I am left to wondering… why did I wait?

Anyone know of an addiction center for Masterbuilt Smoker addicts?

I may have to check myself in.

Eat well, my friends. Eat well.
