The best time to plan for Thanksgiving.

Planning your thanksgiving meal (c)thejoyofeatingwell

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and it is never too early to start planning for it. I am a firm believer that even a tiny-tiny bit of organization helps simplify the Big Day. Spending time upfront in preplanning and organization helps reduce stress and allows for more spontaneity later.

When is the best time to start planning for Thanksgiving?

Ideally, the first week of November is the best time to start lining out your Thanksgiving. After years and decades of hosting the family Thanksgiving, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.  I used to be wound so tightly and so stressed that everything wouldn’t turn out just right.  Not anymore.

What changed?

Preplanning.

First, plan out the menu.

Brainstorm the entire wish list for Thanksgiving, from the turkey to the appetizers.  Even write down the small items such as coffee, creamer, and butter. Write everything down. And I mean everything.

  1. Make sure you aren’t missing anything.
  2. Assign yourself the dishes you want to make.
  3. Confirm with guests the favorite dishes they want to make.
  4. Have a list ready of suggested dishes for guests who want to help out… yet aren’t sure what to bring.
  5. Highlight in pink everything that can be done ahead of time and highlight in yellow what others are bringing.

Next, plan out the timing schedule.

Do you realize how many dishes can be prepared ahead of time?  Think about every single dish and its ingredients.  Making roasted vegetables?  Blanch them ahead of time so they are ready to go.  Making appetizers with fresh vegetables?  Cut them up the day before.  You can even set and decorate the Thanksgiving table several days in advance.

  1. Get as many things done as possible as far in advance as possible.
  2. Realize if there are any missing ingredients before it becomes critical.
  3. Set a timer for key time periods, such as when to get the turkey in the oven.
  4. If guests arrive early, you will be less stressed about it.
  5. You will be more relaxed and therefore able to enjoy your guests and spend more time visiting.

And there you have it!
Simply taking the time to address these two areas: preplanning the menu and preplanning the timing schedule will absolutely make this a stress-free Thanksgiving!
Happy preplanning.

Hey, Lyndi, this is how we roll, here, too. You should see our group fb message that's been going for a week, already. 🙂
However, one year, I had the table in the formal dining room set up, already, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (well, actually, the night before) and very early Sunday morning our smoke alarm went off. Yes, our house needed me to call for a firetruck!
A switch in the furnace was burning out and had ignited the surrounding attic supports. Our very excellent fire safety providers saved our day, but since the furnace was blowing during all the excitement, a few teensy embers had blown throughout the house, one landing on the dining table, creating a hole in the lace tablecloth. Sighs.
It is almost unnoticeable and reminds us of one more thing for which to be thankful. 🙂

Oh wow, what a story! Did you keep the lace tablecloth and recount the story each Thanksgiving? : )

The correct answer is all of them! But mostly, you can’t have Thanksgiving without turkey, sweet potatoes, and veggies. It’s un-American.

This crazy-awesome pie is stuffed with an abundance of shredded turkey, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, and gravy – Ding! Ding! Ding! – You guessed correctly! It also has ooey-gooey cheese and sour cream to add a layer of comforting delight.

Link in bio for my Thanksgiving-inspired pot pie that uses three @wickspies 8″ raw circles. One for the base and two to cut lattice strips (using a ravioli cutter) so that it looks extra pretty. Of course, you could just use two raw circles. One for the base and one for the top. Just cut some slits on the top crust so that some ooey-gooey delightfulness can do its thang.
