Eating without thinking.

All day long we shuffle along without thinking. Blink. Breathe. Walk with our right foot followed by the left one. Open up the computer and check our email’s inbox. Pour another cup of coffee. Slurp it down. Blink again.

Now, I am not saying there is anything wrong with going on rote. Sometimes I just wonder why we do the things we do and only stop to question whether to continue when something big interrupts our life or we get bored and want to try something new.

Are you one of those people who like to mix things up by taking the long way to work?

Are you constantly seeking out new recipes, new ingredients, and new techniques?

Would your kids and loved ones describe you as someone who lives life with a hefty side of interesting?

Are you still eating apples the old way?

Wait. What?

Apples?

Yes, apples. The old way.  Eating without thinking about how you are eating it.

I was in that camp, too.  You know, the one where you hold an apple with two fingers on the top of the core and the thumb holding it up on the bottom. Merrily I would munch away, avoiding the core, stems, and seeds and once finished, toss the remainder in the compost bin.

The remainder, my friends, is about 30% of the apple.

My sister in law, Alicia, sent me an article with a video attachment that demonstrated a “new” way to eat apples.  Ironically, it is not even new at all.  Back in the days when waste-not-want-not was the status quo and food was rarely eaten without thinking about where it came from and with an attitude of thankfulness, apples were eaten from bottom to top.  Seeds and all.

It’s true.

After watching the video, I just had to try it. Minus the seeds and stem.

Mind.

Blown.

Now, it’s your turn.

Eat well, my friends. Eat well.
