In search of pretty with a side of functional.

Pretty and functional - Target Threshold white bowl (c) nwafoodie

There are things in everyday life that are functional and rarely pretty. Take, for instance, the average toilet paper roll holder in the bathroom. Or the six-hundred-button television remote control that sits next to the stereo remote, which sits next to the amazon fire remote. Some of you right now may be thinking, “but I put those remotes in a pretty basket,” or perhaps thinking “my toilet roll holder rocks.” If so, I want to be you.

I do my best to try to find ways to make the everyday a bit more special. And you know what? Like exercise, the more I act upon this quest, the more toned I become.

Look around. Do you have stacks and stacks of multi-colored plastic bowls with built in plastic straws? I mean, are you SURE that the dishwasher is cleaning inside that tiny cave? What about storage containers? My heart used to sink a little each time I reached for a warped, microwaved burned, slightly stained plastic container. Now, my heart lifts when it’s time to store something in the fridge or take along as a snack.

It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.

Or cluttered.

All it takes is an every day search of pretty… with a side of functional.

Here’s a little photo tour of three every day items around my home that elevate pretty in two ways: for the items they cradle and for how they make me feel.

Target Threshold white square bowl.

This simple basic white bowl is perfect for storing eggs in the fridge and for sitting on the countertop. The low profile allows a more even distribution because of its shallow depth. Extra credit if you can find a farm that provides pretty eggs in all shapes and colors.

Beeswrap sustainable reusable wrap.

These wraps are made of beeswax, organic cotton, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin and the warmth of your hands soften the wrap to create a seal. I use mine for wrapping cheese and covering small bowls. The charm is also in the design and each time I unwrap it, it gives me a little thrill. The Freckled Hen Farmhouse in Fayetteville sells these in two sizes. (They are out of stock at the moment on their site, so if you feel like you absolutely must have these sooner then later, they are available on amazon. Please note, this link is my amazon affiliate link.)

Ball mason jars.

You know these little cuties already, don’t you? Whether you have Ball, Kerr, or Weck… by all means please use them for more than canning and pickling. I use mine for storing just about anything. And look how pretty they make plain yogurt and puréed strawberries look! Shhhh… oftentimes when I pull out my yogurt in these jars people will automatically assume that I am eating homemade yogurt.

See what I mean?

These three areas are little ways that I bring joy in our life by introducing pretty with a side of functional. What about you? How are you making the every day extra special?

Now it’s time for me to eat breakfast… thanks for stopping by!

Happy pretty-fying.

Eat well, my friends. Eat well.
