Breakfast dates are the best dates.

Meeting up for drinks, coffee, or dinner was so yesterday. If you’re overlooking the morning hours, you’re missing out because breakfast dates are the best!

“Hey, let’s meet up for drinks at 5:00.”

“Want to grab a coffee tomorrow before lunch?”

“I made reservations at 7:00, but they’re booked until 8:30. Will that work?”

Technically, all of these scenarios ARE pretty awesome because who doesn’t like to get together with good friends or go on a date with the love of your life? However, you miss out if you’ve never thought of having a legit breakfast date.

Let me share three simple reasons why breakfast dates are the best dates.

  1. Breakfast encourages slow living.
  2. It starts the day off on a positive note.
  3. Breakfast costs less than drinks and dinner out.

Let’s chat about these.

Breakfast encourages slow living.

Just like coffee dates, there is something special about breakfast. You find a booth or a particular spot in the sun, and the waitress or waiter immediately brings you a steaming cup of hot coffee. Preferably in a cute mug (always ask for a cute mug).

Coffee means lingering.

Chatting.

Smiling between sips.

Take your time, and get a refill. Focus on your date. Ask questions and listen. Listen.

Dennis always goes for pancakes because we never have them at the house. It’s fun to watch him add gobs of butter right away so that it has time to melt when he is ready for it. He lingers as he sips coffee and takes a bite of eggs, hashbrowns or lives in the moment with me. Time seems to slow down. The crescendo at the end of the breakfast date is that pancake. Butter melted and slathered with the type of pancake syrup I never keep at home (shudder).

You know what?

It all makes him happy.

Because breakfast is happy food.

Who wouldn’t want a happy date with happy food and happy people?

It starts the day off on a positive note.

Reread that last sentence: Who wouldn’t want a happy date with happy food and happy people?

Right?

If you’re a morning person, you may find it hard to “waste time” just sitting and eating because that’s when you are the most productive. This probably means you’re all over time blocking, scheduling, and to-do lists. You get my point. Intentionally having a breakfast date can go on your “self-care” checklist.

If you’re an evening person, okay, no problemo. Many restaurants that serve breakfast and lunch only are open until mid-afternoon, and you can order breakfast up until it closes! If your day starts at 2 pm, so be it. Let your day begin on that same “breakfast is happy food” note as everyone else!

Breakfast costs less than dinner and drinks out.

All “price of eggs these days” jokes aside, breakfast can be super economical.

Think for a moment, what is the most expensive menu item on a breakfast menu? I’m guessing that it’s probably a skillet or omelet plate for around $15. Right? That’s still crazy less than a dinner plate at a restaurant!

And here’s the crazy part – you don’t even have to buy the $15 omelet plate! Take a look at the sides and bundle up a few. Share that stack of pancakes. Order a side salad with those scrambled eggs. Skip the eggs and order a mimosa!

The point is, have fun with the happy breakfast food! It doesn’t have to be expensive, and guess what? You never see appetizers listed at a breakfast joint. That’s what coffee is for!

Bring on the bacon!

Hopefully, your head is bobbing up and down, saying yes, yes, yes to all three points.

No longer will you have to stay up late at night and be around lots of loud people at bars and restaurants. With a breakfast date, you will avoid getting stuck with expensive appetizers and desserts.

Some of my happiest and calm-inducing memories are when I treat myself to a breakfast date. Even more joyful? Breakfast out with my Dennis.

So, it’s time to grab your car keys, text that special person, and meet up at the local breakfast spot today or tomorrow.

Enjoy your day!

Sunny side up.

Eat well, my friends.
